Sometimes a simple health problem could be prolonged by unethical doctors or unethical hospital policy. I, myself have to find this out through my own experience. My suffering lasted for nearly 8 months. This could be avoided if only doctors tackle the root of the problem. An experience that I wish to share with people out there so that they are aware. Let me tell you the story of my experience so that it would not repeat on another individual who has the similar problem that I had.
My problem started back in June 2011. Before this I do not have any sinus or running nose problem in the early morning. In fact I do not know what the heck sinus is. I took a flight for business trip to Thailand. During the flight descend I had experienced pain on my left face (chin area near the nose right up to the forehead). I thought nothing of it as the pain gone away after touchdown. When I gotten back to Penang then my hearing started to be affected. I experienced dampening of my hearing in my right ear. A month later, I took another flight for business trip. This time was to Shenzhen, China. During the flight ascending, I gotten relieve and my hearing regained when my ears popped from the pressure of the cabin. I could hear loud and clear. During descend, my hear got affected once again. When I gotten back to Penang this round, both ears were affected and I could not hear very well. It was like hearing through a layer of water. The "underwater" feeling.
I began to sense something was wrong. So I went to see the 1st ENT (Ear Nose Throat) doctor. This doctor probed my ears with a scope. His diagnose was that my middle ears were filled with fluid.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_ear
He had shown and explained to me how and what to look for when middle ear is flooded. The doctor told me that middle ear fluid is quite often caused by fluid left over after an infection such as cold, etc.
He told me to take some nasal spray (Nasonex then switched to Afrin) together with Clarinase + antihistamine to try to force out the fluid naturally. Said that it would softened the Eustachian tube and flush out the fluid from both middle ears. However, after 2 weeks of trying still could not resolve my issue. I took the facial CT scan. Looking at the CT scan results, he recommended inserting tube in the ear drum. By doing this procedure, it would be able to clear up the fluid in my middle ear. He said that it is quite normal procedure done on patient with this kind of problem. The tube will last for some time and then it would drop off by itself after 4-6 months. Once dropped off, the hole would heal up by itself within a week.
I decided to take the operation. For a while both ears recovered in terms of hearing. However, after 2 weeks my left ear got flooded again. That was when I heard from my ENT that he actually did not put a tube in my left ear. He only did an incision and the hole healed up after 1 week. Since my sinus backflow problem still exists, every time I sleep at night – fluid flow into my middle ear. By the time I woke up in the morning, my ears would have been flooded. And the terrible thing was that it took hours and hours for the fluid to drain out. The whole cycle repeated again at night when I slept.
One month passed after the operation and my situation did not get better. I asked the ENT what was the root cause for the sinus backflow. He told me that might be my sinus is blocked and suggested doing the balloon sinuplasty surgery to clear up the sinus blockage. This time I freaked out and gone to get a second opinion from another ENT.

The second ENT was a very popular doctor so it means long waiting time. Lots of people came see him and he is the kind of doctor that does not say much. He neither explains a lot nor gives much information. He took a look at my CT scan done prior to the first operation. Immediately he gave assurance that he knows the problem. He recommends performing another surgery. This time on my nose to open up the cavity to allow easy flow of the sinus fluid.
The third ENT found the root cause to my sinus backflow problem. It is caused by dust mite allergy. It seems that I have dust mite allergy and I do not even realized it. I have done the dust mite allergy test under this ENT’s recommendation. The results came back positive.

My allergy test report can be downloaded from below for your reference. I have removed my name and information for privacy purpose. According to the doctor, 6 is most severe. Mine was 4 and 2. There are 17 types of dust mite but my doctor told me no need to spend money doing all 17. He said only need to do 2 of the common ones.
Sure enough with the 2, he was able to assess my condition and found the root cause.

The ENT then proposed using the therapy method of reduces exposure to dust mite. We are mostly exposed to dust mite at night when we sleep in the bed. He recommends using Z-net to encase the bed and also pillow and comforter. Z-net is soluble netting that release chemical slowly killing the dust mite in the bed and pillow. It lasts up to 2 years before one need to change a new net.
I started use of the Z-net from Jan 2012. Below is a diary record I kept of the day to day recovery that I undergone. When one gets into this kind of situation for nearly 6 months, every day's progress really matters.
Dust mite allergy normally causes people to have running nose, blockage in the early morning when you wake up. Much so because you have been exposed to dust mite at night when you sleep. According to my ENT, about 70~80% of the population in Malaysia is allergic to dust mite. Sinus problem, eczema and asthma are another illness that is potentially caused by dust mite allergy. The Z-net works for me. Simple solution like this actually saved me from my 8 months of suffering and also not to mention amount of money spent on medicine and surgery. I would like to make sure that people are aware of this solution.
Of course putting Z-net alone is not sufficient if you do not practice eliminating exposure to dust mite from other sources. Here is what I have been practicing other than Z-net:
If you need to get the Z-net, I would be able to supply to you. Note that I am not really a distributor or sales person. I am just trying to help out people who has the same problem as me. I do not want to see people being con by unethical ENT doctors. Would like to spread the awareness. Remember, 70%-80% of the general population are allergy to dust mite. Some of the problem might occur in minor magnitude at young age. However, as age catches up like my case it could potentially blew up like a time bomb.
Right now since I am staying in Penang, Malaysia, I would be able to deliver to you personally and provide some instruction of use. For people in Penang who need to get the Z-net, you can send me a message through the inquiry box below. Or you can send email to [email protected]. Leave me your email, name and telephone contact.
I will give you a call to arrange for delivery. We can meet up some place in Penang. I am staying on the island. You can find the various price list for different items by clicking at the Z-net link above this webpage. It ranges from Z-net for King size, Queen size, single bed, also available for children comforter, pillow case, etc. Allow me about one week to get the items for you.
For those outside of Penang, I could try to find some means to get it delivered to you.
Please spread this story of my experience so that people who has sinus, runny nose or asthma problem would be able to be aware. High possibility that their problem is like mine caused by dust mite allergy. If it is then a simple solution would help save a lot of money, suffering, time...
I started use of the Z-net from Jan 2012. Below is a diary record I kept of the day to day recovery that I undergone. When one gets into this kind of situation for nearly 6 months, every day's progress really matters.
- Jan 15 (Sun) - Left ear started to pop a bit early morning 8.50am. Throughout the day popping but did not fully recovered.
- Jan 16 (Mon) - Pop early morning. Lasted good until end of the day then flooded at night again.
- Jan 18 (Wed) - Half day half full situation, only minor uneasiness.
- Jan 22 (Sun) - Evening 7.30pm popped while having reunion dinner at Equatorial Hotel. But flood back quite easily.
- Jan 26 (Thu) - Some time 6.00pm in the evening, ears started to crack. Not fully recovered but some good progress.
- Jan 28 (Sat) - Evening 9.00pm ear cracked popped when I hold my nose and blew. Not fully recovered but relieved quite a bit of pressure.
- Jan 29 (Sun) - Started from 10.00am left ear started to pop released throughout the day. Pressure released to very comfortable level.
- Jan 30 (Mon) - Early morning pop clear fully. Lasted throughout the day.
- Jan 31 (Tue) - 7.00am started first pop, second pop half an hour later cleared up the flooding left ear. Lasted throughout the day.
- Feb 2012 - full recovery of both ears and the sinus back-flow also stopped.

Of course putting Z-net alone is not sufficient if you do not practice eliminating exposure to dust mite from other sources. Here is what I have been practicing other than Z-net:
- Wash the bed cover and pillow, bolster cases every week (preferably in warm water more than 50degC)
- Clean the air condition filter every 2 weeks
- Do not turn on the ceiling fan in the room. Fan will blow and circulate dust mite in the air. One will potentially inhale these since it is floating in the air for quite some time.
